GIVEN LIFE SENTENCE

“south: ‘Kfrica' s fascist government added one more brutal | crime. to its long list when it sentenced the 59-year-old Abram Fischer to. a life sentence May 9 for alleged "conspiracy to.commit sabotage" and "furthering" the aims of the Communist party. One of South. Africa's outstanding barristers, Fischer's real "crime" was serving as attorney for the defense in the famous Rivonia trial in 1964 in which Nelson Mandela and other freedom fighters were given life sentences. When he was sentenced, Fischer turned to the packed public gallery in the courtroom, smiled broadly and gave the salute of the banned African National Congress -- a | raised clenched fist with thumb pointing upward.
