About this archive
An alpha. The archive is being built and this is what is in it so far.
- Fourth International 1958–64 — 0 articles
- World Outlook 1963–68 — 3,054 articles
- Inprecor 1974–77 — 556 articles
- International Marxist Review 1982–94 — 0 articles
What is here, and what is not
The Fourth International’s English-language periodicals, kept as separate publications because they were: Fourth International spoke for the International Secretariat before the 1963 reunification; World Outlook was founded as the reunified International’s weekly news service and became Intercontinental Press in 1968; Inprecor was launched in 1974 as the United Secretariat’s own fortnightly, beside the SWP-controlled Intercontinental Press, and merged into it in 1979.
Not yet in: Fourth International (1958–64), whose eighteen issues are held as scans, and the International Marxist Review (1982–94), whose text is held but not yet cut into articles. Inprecor nos. 68–79 (1977–79) are not held by any archive we know of.
Where the text comes from, and how far to trust it
Every article is read from the printed page by machine and then cut into articles using the issue’s own printed contents list, which was checked against the page image by eye.
- Inprecor is typeset and was read with Apple’s Vision engine. Measured against Marxists Internet Archive transcriptions of two Mandel articles it gets about one word in thirty to forty wrong.
- World Outlook is typewritten and single-spaced, which defeats Vision, so it was read with Tesseract. Measured against MIA’s transcription of a Mandel essay it reproduces about 91% of the text’s three-word sequences exactly.
Accurate enough to read and to search, but it carries scanner errors; headlines and captions are the worst of it. Quote from the scan, not from here. Where an article was placed by its printed page number rather than found in the text, the article says so.
