Anniversaries
These papers marked dates: eighty years since Trotsky’s birth, twenty-five since the founding of the Fourth International, a hundred since the First International, fifty since October. They are gathered here by the last digit of the year in which the event happened, because that is the digit its round anniversaries fall on: the Fourth International, founded in 1938, comes round again in 2038; the Bolivian revolution of 1952 in 2032. Reading one group gives the dates that fall together, in calendar order.
An article rarely names the year it remembers: it says “twenty years after” and leaves the sum to the reader. The year is worked out here and each date checked; the interval shown is the one the article gives. Only articles that mark a date are listed, not those that mention one in passing.
